Getting to Novokuznetsk
Novokuznetsk is a major city in Western Siberia, located in the Kemerovo Oblast (Kuzbass region) of Russia. While it's not as well-connected internationally as Moscow or St. Petersburg, it's reasonably accessible for domestic travelers and those arriving via major Russian hub cities.
By Air
Spichenkovo Airport (NOZ) serves Novokuznetsk with domestic flights connecting to Moscow, St. Petersburg, and other Russian cities. The airport is located roughly 20 km from the city center. Travelers from abroad will typically connect through Moscow (Sheremetyevo or Domodedovo) or another major Russian hub. The flight from Moscow takes around 4 hours.
By Rail
Novokuznetsk is served by the Trans-Siberian Railway network. Trains connect the city to Novosibirsk (around 5–6 hours), Kemerovo, and other Siberian cities. Long-distance trains also run to Moscow, though this is a journey of well over a day. The railway station is centrally located, making arrival by train very convenient.
By Road
Road connections link Novokuznetsk to Novosibirsk (approximately 310 km) and other cities in the Kemerovo region. Long-distance bus services operate on these routes. Driving is feasible in good conditions, but Siberian winter roads require experience and appropriate preparation.
Getting Around the City
- Public transport: A network of buses, trolleybuses, and marshrutkas (shared minibuses) covers the city extensively and is the most affordable option
- Taxis: Widely available; app-based taxi services work well in Novokuznetsk
- Walking: The city center is walkable, though distances between major districts are considerable
